I reckon asshole characters work best when they've got their shit together more so than almost everyone else around them. I think it starts with having an asshole character be a camp, effeminate, childish weirdo with several personality disorders and a worthless life. It's hard to pinpoint exactly where Roger doesn't work for me. Evidently, most people consider Roger to be an exemplar of the asshole done right. Anyway, assholes have to be handled delicately and with balance. With Roger, it's essentially a relationship of domestic abuse, except that the complexity of the family tree, Roger's alien status, and the simple fact that it's a cartoon sitcom allow the writers to side-step the reality of it (I don't even care about DV being used for humour in an "edgy" comedy, but it's good to be honest about what it is, even in analogue terms). When you've got one who tortures the people around them, while they just take it without retribution and continue to love the asshole regardless, the asshole becomes even harder to write. (I love Bob's Burger, FWIW, but only for Bob, and maybe Tina.)Īsshole characters are difficult to create and write. All of their flaws and not a single one of their vaguely redeeming qualities. Roger is basically the entire family from Bob's wrapped into one incredible package. Bob's Burgers, for example, is a show about a guy called Bob and how his family ruins his life, and why their subsequent off-screen murder is justifiable homicide. I know opinions are like assholes, but am I truly alone on this one?

I've even looked on Google to see if anyone else shares this Roger hate and I'm coming up empty handed. Almost every one of his characters serve to play the same two roles Stan's rival or Steve's sidekick/rival. He's a walking, talking McGuffin that has some of the most predictable humor of the show. What started off as a goofy background character became the main character in a matter of seasons. Roger very gradually, but also in a way, very quickly, became the central focus of the show. And watching it like that, one or two a night, has given me a different view of a character and show I used to think was hilarious.
